Pescennius Niger (AD 193–194). AR Denarius.  Struck in Antioch. Obverse: IMP CAES C P-ESC NIGER AVG – laureate head of Pescennius Niger right. Reverse: HILARITAS AVG – Hilaritas standing facing, head left, grounded palm in right hand, cornucopia in left, S-C across fields. (different legends, no S-C). Exceptionally rare — only one example recorded in AC Search. Condition: NGC Choice XF 5/5 – 3/5. 8467257-001

Of particular interest is the S-C (Senatus Consulto) mark appearing across the fields of the reverse. As a claimant to imperial power during the tumultuous Year of the Five Emperors, Pescennius Niger used his Antiochene coinage as a deliberate instrument of propaganda. The presence of S-C on a silver denarius is highly unusual — this abbreviation was traditionally reserved for bronze emissions and carried the explicit meaning of senatorial approval and authorization. Its inclusion here was clearly a calculated political statement: Niger sought to persuade both the populace and his troops that he ruled with the full blessing of the Senate and within the framework of legitimate Roman tradition, positioning himself as the lawful emperor against the rival claims of Septimius Severus. The reverse type of Hilaritas — goddess of joy and good fortune — reinforces this message, projecting an image of stability and prosperity under his rule.

This piece stands among the rarest survivors of Niger's brief reign. With only a single example currently recorded in ACSearch, this denarius represents not merely a numismatic rarity but an exceptional historical document — a tangible artifact of one man's desperate bid for legitimacy during one of Rome's most volatile succession crises.
